Last month my husband and I went to Saint Maarten for a few weeks. While we were there, that small island was having its national Saint Maarten/ St Martin Day. We decided to attend and participate in the activities. Thinking that we would be ” just one of the crowd” and we wold just blend in, we didn’t get dressed up, but attended in very casual attire.
Surprise, surprise, surprise!
I was not prepared to meet the elite. We clearly were not one of the locals, and people started to ask who we were. Before I knew it I was getting my picture taken with Presidents and granted an audience with the Prime minister of St Maarten, Sarah Prescott. And invited to a special dinner!
I was reminded how important it is to always be prepared to meet people who might have influence over your career. Time and time again I am reminded that executives only get a small candid shot of you and you just do not know when those times might be. One of my first guests on Today’s Inspiring Women, Best selling author, Debra Fine, will be addressing how to conduct small talk to engage conversation during these snap shot moments. Tune on Thursday, March 21st at noon PST.
